Portnoo
Donegal
Best Wind Direction: North
Beach Faces: West and North (2 bays)
Best Tide: mid
Shore Type: sand
Portnoo works well in anything from a SW through W to NE. The beach generally faces NW but due to an island in the middle of the bay (accessible on foot at low tide) the beach is effectively split between westerly facing and northerly face parts. A decent W or NW swell will produce very good bump and jump/ beginner wave conditions, but the beach is best known for its freeride credentials. North wind is best for long reaches, especially good when the swell gets up. WSW is good for blasting on flat water to the island and back. While southerly winds tend to be poor in general, a SE force 6 and above combined with a low tide produces really good speedsailing conditions, although can be a bit gusty.
